THE CRISIS OF IDENTITY
There comes a point in your life when you ask yourself perhaps this most important question: “who am I?” What follows is a cascade of puzzles, mysteries, and realizations that are transformative as you discover your truth. Too often in adoption we live in deception, false identities, and constructs that leave us feeling dissociated and disconnected from ourselves. Countless numbers of people adopted away from their origins struggle alone in silence. Uncovering the truth is a process of reconnecting with yourself in the most profound way. If you feel ready to embark on this journey of self- transformation, contact me now.
Transform for Life
ADOPTION TRAUMA IS REAL
I believe that all methods of adoption creates trauma, or as Paul Sunderland says - multiple traumas. This is a bold statement that challenges the accepted notion that adoption is a means to create forever families, save children, and have everyone live happily ever after. However, the truth is out as more parents and adopted people are sharing their experiences of trauma and other adverse childhood experiences. This is why education is so important.
As a society, we have been socialized to view adoption in a monolithic way that is celebrated. Yet, adopted people are pathologized and over-represented in therapy. I ask you to hear me out and begin with these questions I have heard from my clients. “Why do I feel like an imposter? Not good enough? Fearful of being rejected, abandoned, alone?”
For teachers, doctors, therapists, parents, caretakers, guardians, you represent their support system. I understand you are left in a state of despair and confusion too often feeling desperate for any solution. “We have done everything we can think of to love, care, give.” No amount of therapy, medications, hospitalizations, IEDs, seem to help. With the trauma-informed education movement sparked by ACEs and Nadine Harris, the former Surgeon General of California, it’s time we acknowledge the trauma(s) that comes with adoption.
